Who you are in the Firm

Litigation for litigation’s sake has no place in Margaret Widlund’s pragmatic and business-oriented approach to getting her clients out of difficult situations in an efficient way. She understands first-hand that litigating cannabis business issues is enormously nuanced and disruptive to the flow of companies. For this reason, Margaret vigilantly explores all available means short of a full-scale litigation to effect expeditious and favorable resolutions to disputes, whether through direct negotiation with your company’s adversaries or some means of alternative dispute resolution, such as mediation or arbitration. Margaret leads the firm’s litigation and administrative law practice with support from the other firm members to stay current on the ever-changing landscape of laws, regulations, and policy-shifts.

Draw to Cannabis Law

Prior to her brilliant move to 7 Point, Margaret was based in Silicon Valley where her practice included commercial litigation, intellectual property matters, and corporate transactions. She served a diverse range of clients including individual investors, start-ups, and mature public companies. The adaptation of general litigation principles to the newly forming body of cannabis law allows her to synthesize her extensive knowledge of intellectual property, administrative law, risk evaluation and mitigation, ADR, and civil litigation. She also frequently speaks at CLEs and cannabis trade shows on topics ranging from intellectual property to ethics.

What Client Experience

Margaret’s clients range from cannabis growers to serial entrepreneurs to sophisticated business owners, and she is skillful in communicating options and possible outcomes to this diverse range of personalities. Whether she is talking partners through the real-world application of various clauses in formed contractual relationships, or decoding the confluence of multiple cannabis licensure violations, she makes it her responsibility to ensure that clients learn enough about their situation to make informed choices. Most important, Margaret will call or email you back even if just to say, I am working on a solution for you, or waiting for a response from another person.

Experience and Education

It is a truth universally acknowledged that no matter what situation a client presents, Margaret Widlund is fully equipped to do battle. When Margaret takes on a case, her clients reap the benefit of her considerable knowledge, experience, and intense personal investment, as well as her ready sense of professionalism and ethics. Margaret earned her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science from the University of San Francisco, and her Juris Doctorate from Willamette University, College of Law. Before graduating from law school, Margaret spent a year as a visiting scholar at Seattle University School of Law. She is proud to be admitted to practice law in both California and Washington state.

Outside of work, Margaret enjoys ultrarunning, volunteer coaching for Girls On The Run, amateur nature photography, and exploring the trails around the North Cascades with her husband, and two rescue dogs.
